Attention all Risk, Insurance & Financial Services Majors and all Finance Majors -
If you are interested in a financial planning career, there are a couple of very important opportunities that are available to you!
1. The UNT Student Money Management Center (SMMC) provides personal financial and money management education to students. In addition to seminars and presentations, SMMC provides confidential individual financial consultations and planning services. All services are free for UNT Denton-campus students. For more information about SMMC, please check out the following link: http://moneymanagement.unt.edu/.
Beginning Spring 2014, SMMC has opportunities for all RIFS and FINA majors who are interested in a career in financial planning:
A. SMMC will offer a semester-long internship program open to interested students. As an SMMC intern, students will have the opportunity to learn how a financial counseling program is run, observe financial consultant and coaching sessions, assist with the development and presentation of workshops on financial topics and related events, and participate in other SMMC activities. Students with an adequate level of personal finance knowledge may be allowed to actively participate in the financial consultant and coaching sessions.
B. For students who wish to get involved but do not have the time to commit to an entire semester, SMMC offers other ways to obtain hands-on experience in the financial planning area. For example, students could develop and present a workshop on a particular financial topic, review and assess SMMC’s current programs and determine how they serve the needs of students, identify topics most often covered in financial consultant and coaching sessions, examine pre- and post-tests looking for trends, analyze trends in overall workshop satisfaction and learning outcomes, and develop tools and resources that could be used in future workshops or coaching sessions.
If you wish to apply for either of these opportunities, or if you have any questions, please contact Rachel Grimes AFC®, Assistant Director, Student Money Management Center, by phone at 940-369-7761, or by e-mail at Rachel.Grimes@unt.edu. Space is limited, so be sure to apply soon!!
2. On Friday, January 31, 2014, the DFW chapter of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) will host its annual Career Day which connects hiring companies with students seeking full-time or internship opportunities by organizing over one hundred, 15-minute interviews on this day. Additionally, several informal interviews take place throughout the day. This event is the largest of its kind for the financial planning industry and attracts students from not just across Texas, but throughout the US.
North Texas students have home field advantage because the hiring firms are all from the DFW area, including one from Denton. This is a tremendous opportunity to interview on the spot for these positions in your own backyard. What do you need to do? First, update your resume and write a cover letter stating what type of job you’re looking for and why you would be a good hire. Secondly, email your resume and cover letter (making sure your cover letter is addressed broadly to all financial planning firms who will be interviewing) to firstname.lastname@example.org by Wednesday, December 18, 2013.
Please check out the following ink for additional important information on this event, which will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison, Texas: http://www.fpadfw.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=126
