Maria Michelle Anthony, a current student in the M.S. in Business Analytics program at the G. Brint Ryan College of Business and a member of the Business Analytics Club, shared her internship experience from Summer 2024.
In her own words:
"I had the privilege to join Dollar General from May 20th, 2024, to July 26th, 2024, as a Summer Intern. I met them in my college’s career fair and after an amazing conversation, they reached out to me for an interview.
My job entitled me to shadow a new supervisor/manager each week and have a high-level overview of how a distribution center (DC) works. Each week they would rotate me to different departments and learn how the supervisor operates. I worked with 4 other interns in various other states and DCs on a project called Analysis of 3rdParty Unloading Vendors which we had to present in the headquarters in the last week of my internship in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
From a data analysis perspective, my project was a perfect fit for me. My project Analysis of 3rd Party Unloading Vendors was about analyzing the data and cost that the third-partyunloading company was charging Dollar General. I personally had the company Merit, which unloaded the trailers in over five DCs. They sent me a cost analysis excel sheet from corporate to look over and do analysis of it and find ways to reduce costs. I then sent those reports with the calculations to all the DC’s directors.
By the end of my project, my analysis itself lead to Dollar General saving $650,000 annually. They were very impressed by my findings.
This internship was very impactful and most valuable. I would like to thank my university for creating a medium to reach out to these corporations and Dollar General for a wonderful experience."
