The First in Business Program is the only UNT initiative tailored exclusively for first-generation business students, providing structured mentorship, career readiness, and direct industry connections to bridge the gap between college and career success.

About

First in Business is a leadership and support program for first-generation students in the Ryan College of Business at the University of North Texas. Each year, only 25 students are selected to join this tight-knit, high-impact cohort.

We know that navigating college without a built-in roadmap can be overwhelming. That’s why First in Business offers students structured support, financial resources, and real community—starting from day one. Through the program, students access mentorship, career prep, academic guidance, and financial stipends—all earned through progress in the EDGE app, UNT’s professional development platform.

Students participate in workshops, attend professional events, connect with peer and faculty mentors, and build confidence that lasts beyond graduation. The program is designed to help students not just succeed, but thrive, lead, and launch.

What Students Receive:

  • Peer mentorship and academic success tools
  • Resume-building events and career coaching
  • Financial stipends awarded each year (up to $1,850, with additional leadership stipends available)
  • Access to internship prep, networking, and real-world business experiences
  • A strong, connected community of first-gen students pursuing business careers

The Distinguished Fellows Initiative:
High-performing students may be invited to apply for our Distinguished Fellows Initiative—a leadership track for returning students who serve as peer mentors, event hosts, and program ambassadors. Fellows gain additional leadership training, visibility across campus, and supplemental stipend opportunities in recognition of their impact.

Our Student Success Goals:

  • Graduate in four years
  • Complete an internship before senior year
  • Secure a job or graduate program offer by graduation
  • Aim for 75% job placement with starting salaries above the regional average for their business major
