The University of North Texas G. Brint Ryan College of Business is taking strides to equip future leaders with the tools to balance present economic concerns with long term economic thinking through a new course, Sustainability Management. This three-credit-hour course explores the intersection of sustainability practices and business operations within the modern global corporate landscape, providing students with critical knowledge for fostering long-term business viability.
“In today's global economy, sustainability is no longer an option—it’s a necessity,” said Dr. Jae Webb, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Management. “This course equips students with the tools to think critically and act strategically, ensuring they can lead businesses toward a more sustainable and profitable future.”
The course examines the historical roots, philosophical foundations, and practical applications of sustainability in business. Students will explore different perspectives on economic policy, resource consumption, and sustainability operations. By analyzing moral, social, ecological, and humanitarian arguments, students will gain an understanding of what it means to implement sustainable business practices. Students will also participate in group research projects, analyzing case studies on companies transitioning from unsustainable to sustainable practices.
Students will learn to:
- Strategize stakeholder relationships and leverage partnerships to improve sustainability.
- Design organizational strategies that instill sustainability values and long-term mindsets in the workforce.
- Identify inefficiencies in operations and redesign ineffective practices to align with sustainability goals.
This course highlights UNT's commitment to preparing students to lead in a business world increasingly focused on sustainable management and operations. By equipping graduates with the tools to innovate and implement sustainable solutions, UNT continues to make its mark as a leader in forward-thinking business education.
