Originally from Laredo, Texas, and the youngest of four siblings, Ruben’s journey
into higher education and professional growth has been shaped by steady determination
and a deep commitment to self-improvement. Over the past several years, he has moved
from Administrative Specialist to Administrative Coordinator, all while taking on
the added challenge of graduate school.
“I am the youngest of four siblings and a proud first-generation college student. My journey within the Department of Supply Chain Management began almost three years ago when I joined as the Administrative Specialist. During those two years, I had the opportunity to learn the department's operations, work closely with faculty, students, and industry partners, and begin my MBA program. Nearly a year ago, I was promoted to Administrative Coordinator, a role that has given me greater responsibilities and new ways to contribute.”
For Ruben, the decision to pursue a master’s degree was not simply about career advancement but about intentional growth and long-term investment in himself.
“I have always believed that there is never a wrong time to improve yourself. As I considered ways to continue my professional development, I realized that pursuing a master's degree would provide a more comprehensive and meaningful opportunity for growth than simply earning individual certificates.
Importantly, working full-time for UNT provides a very beneficial employee tuition benefit that paid for the vast majority of my schooling. This benefit allowed me to continue my education, which would normally require taking out student loans. For me, earning a master's degree was not only about advancing my career but also about proving to myself that I could accomplish what I set out to do.”
The reality of balancing full-time work with graduate studies quickly became a test of endurance and structure. Days stretched from early morning office responsibilities to late-night assignments, requiring discipline and focus that left little room for spontaneity.
“Balancing graduate school and a full-time job has been both rewarding and demanding. There were many days when my schedule was packed from morning until late at night with work responsibilities, class assignments, group projects, and studying. It required significant discipline and organization to stay on top of everything. At times it felt overwhelming, but it also taught me how much can be accomplished with proper planning and commitment. The experience reinforced the importance of prioritization and helped me develop habits that made me more effective both professionally and academically.”
Like many graduate students balancing full-time careers, Ruben faced moments of exhaustion and doubt. Yet, it was his perspective on challenges, not the absence of them, that carried him through.
“Success is not always about talent or circumstances; often it comes from perseverance and the willingness to keep moving forward when things get difficult. Staying connected to my goals and remembering the opportunities that education creates helped me maintain motivation even during the toughest periods.”
His experience within the College of Business also played a defining role in shaping his academic journey and career outlook, surrounding him with an environment of ambition and collaboration.
“Working within the College of Business has had a tremendous impact on both my educational experience and career aspirations. Being surrounded by faculty, staff, and students who are constantly pursuing knowledge and innovation fostered an environment of growth. The experience reinforced my interest in higher education and organizational leadership while helping me better understand how effective management and collaboration contribute to organizational success.”
More than anything, the journey revealed something deeply personal about his own capacity for growth and resilience.
“Earning this degree taught me that I am capable of accomplishing more than I sometimes give myself credit for. Experience showed me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and self-discipline. It reinforced that meaningful goals often require persistence and sacrifice, but the rewards are worth the effort.
Most importantly, it taught me that growth happens when we challenge ourselves and step outside of our comfort zones.”
As he looks ahead, Ruben hopes his story encourages others who may be standing at the edge of a similar decision, balancing ambition with uncertainty and wondering if the timing is right.
“My advice would be not to wait for the perfect time because it may never come. Pursuing an advanced degree while working full-time is challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Success comes from being organized, managing your time effectively, and remaining committed to your goals even when progress feels slow. It is also important to seek support from those around you. I am extremely appreciative of the encouragement and support I received from Dr. Brian Sauser and Sue Kangas throughout my educational journey. I truly cannot put into words how grateful I am for their support of my educational pursuits. Their encouragement made a meaningful difference in helping me stay motivated and continue moving forward. Most importantly, believe in yourself and remember that personal and professional growth is always worth the investment.”
