Dr. Dexter Purnell is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of North Texas’s G. Brint Ryan College of Business and a highly accomplished professional in the entertainment industry. A three-time Billboard chart-topping recording engineer and a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys), Dr. Purnell brings elite industry experience into the classroom. His commitment to pedagogical excellence was recognized with the 2024 UNT Salute to Faculty Excellence Award for Outstanding Online Teacher and Course. Throughout his career, he has managed projects for major networks and brands, including NBC, ESPN, and JanSport, while collaborating with Grammy-winning artists and industry leaders.
As a scholar, Dr. Purnell conducts research at the intersection of entrepreneurship, entertainment marketing, and consumer behavior. His academic work has been presented at prestigious institutions such as Oxford University’s Saïd Business School and published in leading journals, including the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice and the Journal of Marketing Analytics. He is also the co-author of the textbook Retail Marketing: Managing for Fast-Changing Consumer Demands, Technology, and Trends. Dr. Purnell holds a Doctor of Business Administration from Wilmington University and continues to mentor students within UNT’s undergraduate and doctoral programs, leveraging his unique background as both a practitioner and a researcher.
