Curriculum

The RMI program offers major and minor degrees, as well as insurance certificates. Our curriculum consists of the following seven courses:

  • Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance
  • Property/Liability Risk Management and Insurance
  • Insurance Company Operations
  • Risk Management
  • Life Insurance
  • Estate Planning
  • Employee Benefit Programs

Offering maximum scheduling flexibility, there are three RMI degree paths from which to choose:

B.B.A. Risk, Insurance & Financial Services (Risk and Insurance track; 30 Hours

A B.B.A. in RMI gives students an in-depth understanding of risk management and various types of insurance. Armed with this knowledge, students have a competitive advantage over other (non-RMI) applicants when competing for insurance industry positions.

Required courses:

  • RMIN 2500 Personal Risk Management or RMIN 3100 Intro. to Risk Mgmt & Insurance
  • RMIN 4300 Property/Liab Risk Mgmt & Insur.
  • RMIN 4310 Insurance Company Operations
  • RMIN 4600 Corporate Risk Management

Select two courses from the following:

  • RMIN 4800 Internship
  • RMIN 4200 Life Insurance
  • RMIN 4400 Employee Benefit Programs
  • RMIN 4500 Estate Planning
  • RMIN 4900 Special Problems

Select two courses from any 3000 or 4000 level RCoB courses (approved in advance by the RMIN Faculty Advisor), or any 3000 or 4000 MATH of ECON courses approved for actuarial certificate.

Internship Credit

Students can gain valuable professional experience and connections by working in an internship. Three hours of course credit are available for eligible students with approved employment. The internship course may be used as one of your supporting courses on your degree plan. Students wishing to earn course credit for internships should visit FIREL Internships to learn more.

Eligibility:

  • 2.7 minimum cumulative UNT GPA
  • Completed 12 hours of business upper-division course work (3XXX-4XXX courses)
  • Have a declared major in FIREL Department
  • Be employed in a paid position
  • Employment must be directly related to the major field of study
  • You must work a minimum of 240 hours during the internship course

RMI Professional Education Support

Summary of what we offer:

  • Course waivers (RMIN 4300, 4310 and 4600) for specific professional exams.
  • Independent study (RMIN 4900) for taking professional exam.
  • Financial reimbursement for taking a professional exam on their own.
