It is the responsibility of each student to know and follow the policies as detailed
in this section. More comprehensive information regarding these or other University
policies may be found in the current University of North Texas Graduate Catalog.
Academic Standing
Probation and suspension
A student who fails to achieve the required cumulative average of 3.0 GPA (or 2.6
during their initial semester) on all courses carrying graduate credit in a term/semester
will be placed on academic probation for the subsequent term/semester. If the student
achieves a 3.0 semester GPA in the subsequent term/semester, but the cumulative GPA
is still below 3.0, the student will remain on academic probation. The student will
be removed from probation when the 3.0 cumulative GPA is achieved. A student who is
on probation cannot apply for graduation and cannot graduate.
A student who is placed on academic probation who does not receive either a semester
or a cumulative 3.0 GPA during the term/semester of probation will be subject to academic
suspension for a period of up to one calendar year before becoming eligible to re-enroll
for further graduate courses. Graduate work completed elsewhere during a period of
graduate suspension at UNT may not be counted for graduate credit at UNT. After the
one-year period of suspension, students must reapply for admission to graduate school
(see “Readmission of Graduate Students” in the Admission section of this catalog);
students may then enroll in graduate courses under probation with the same probation
conditions as previously described. Students who are then suspended a second time
without having returned to good academic standing by achieving a cumulative GPA of
3.0 or better will be dismissed from the university.
The student whose UNT GPA in graduate work falls below 3.0 must make up the deficit,
either by repeating courses in which the grades are low, or by completing other UNT
courses with grades high enough to bring the UNT GPA up to 3.0. Low grades made in
graduate courses at UNT may not be duplicated at other institutions.
Student Appeals
The G. Brint Ryan College of Business maintains an internal appeal process for students
who have been suspended or dismissed from a master’s program. Students wishing to
appeal a suspension or dismissal must contact the Graduate Programs Office, located
in BLB 201, via email at RCoBMasters@unt.edu or by phone at 940-369-8977, to formally
communicate their intent to submit an appeal. The Graduate Programs Office will inform
the student of the timeline and the next scheduled meeting of the review committee.
Please note that the committee meets only at designated times during the semester,
and decisions are rendered solely during those meetings. Students must wait until
the committee has convened to receive a decision. As part of the appeal process, students
are required to submit a written appeal letter and may include any supporting documentation
they believe is relevant. The appeal materials, along with the student’s transcripts,
grades, and academic records, will be reviewed by the G. Brint Ryan College of Business
Master’s Program Committee. Following review, the committee will make a determination,
and the student will be notified of the decision.
Course duplications
A student may take a course a second or subsequent time. Students may duplicate graduate
courses in which they received a grade of C or lower, for grade replacement. The Registrar’s
Office will post duplications at the request of the student, at the request of an
academic advisor or upon review of the student’s record. Once a duplication is processed,
only the second grade received is included in the student’s cumulative hours attempted
and grade points earned. A single course may only be repeated once for grade replacement.
Departments may submit to the Toulouse Graduate School a request for an exception
to duplication processing based on extenuating circumstances.
Admission Appeal Process
- Applicants that have been denied by the admission committee may appeal that decision.
- To appeal, applicants must write a letter, no more than two pages, to the Master's
Program Committee (MPC).
- The letter can be submitted in one of two ways:
-
-
- Email the letter in a Word or .pdf file to RCoBMasters@unt.edu
-
Deliver the letter to the Graduate Programs Office (BLB 201).
- The already reviewed supporting documents and letter of appeal will be presented to
the MPC for review.
- Applicants will be notified of the appeal decision.
- There is no further appeal once MPC has rendered an appeal decision.
Change of Major
- If you wish to change from one major to another, you must contact the Graduate Programs
Office located in BLB 201, via email at RCoBMasters@unt.edu or by phone at 940-369-8977.
- Please note that you still must follow specific program application deadlines and
provide supporting application materials to the program.
- The application will only be processed if the student is in good standing.
Concurrent Enrollment
- Approval to enroll in background courses at another institution as well as at UNT
must first be granted by the Graduate Programs Office.
- Approval to enroll in MBA or MS core and/or concentration courses at another institution

Internships
How do I find an internship?
Visit the career center at https://careercenter.unt.edu/channels/business/.
Internship Policy
CoB's MS students become eligible to take their discipline's 5800 graduate internship
course after completing at least one of the discipline's required concentration courses
(BS / MS 5-year accounting students do not have to wait) and meeting the requirements
stated in the graduate catalog. Students may not take any 5800 course outside of their
respective disciplines. Students must meet all departmental requirements and limitations.
- All 5800 courses are graded pass / no pass (P / NP), only.
- Students may take their 5800 course for 1, 2, or 3 semester credit hours (SCH) per
term, subject to departmental approval.
- If allowed by their respective departments, students may apply a maximum of 3 SCHs
of 5800 toward their master's degree requirements.
Students who fail to maintain good academic standing, fail to meet Curricular Practical
Training (CPT) requirements (if any), fail to maintain the minimum number of graduate
credit hours, or fail to demonstrate satisfactory progress toward completion of the
MS degree cannot enroll in any internship course.
Students having graduate non-degree (GNDE) status are not eligible to enroll in any
internship course. BS / MS accounting students having GNDE status may, however, enroll
in a 5800 course.
The Senior Associate Dean, with the approval of the Masters' Program Committee, may
grant a semester exception to this policy on a case-by-case basis.

Special Problems Course (5900)
- Credit will not be given for 4XXX level courses unless taken under a 5900 designation.
- A maximum of 6 to 9 hours may be credited.
- Students should obtain approval from their departmental advisor to take a 5900 course
in order to determine applicability toward the student's degree plan.
- After the 12th class day, a course will not be changed to a 5900 designation.
- If a 4XXX level course provides the basis for the 5900 coursework, sufficient additional
content and requirements must be added to raise the learning outcomes to be equivalent
to a 5XXX course.
- Work-related activities may enhance the course, but cannot be a major component. The
course must be self-supporting, regardless of a work module.
- Projects, examinations, quizzes, homework, etc. are expected to comprise the major
aspects of the course.
- On a case-by-case basis, 5900 coursework may substitute for a required course not
being offered the semester immediately before a student graduates. It may also substitute
if there are other sufficient educational circumstances to warrant doing so.
- These courses will not be allowed to substitute for 5800 internship or cooperative
education courses.
Maximum Enrollment Hours
Graduate students in Masters Programs may enroll in more than 9 credit hours in Fall
or Spring semesters, and more than 6 credit hours in Summer, but only with department
or Graduate Programs Office consent.
Substitutions (Degree Plan)
- Students are responsible for discussing any degree plan substitutions with their respective
department or faculty program director.
- Substitutions are to be approved prior to a student's enrollment in a course not listed
on the degree plan on file.
- Department or faculty program directors will forward the substitution to the Graduate
Programs Office. The Graduate Programs Office will then update the student's degree
plan and forward an updated copy to the Toulouse Graduate School
- NOTE: This process may take several weeks to be posted by the Toulouse Graduate School.
Time Extension Requests
- Students have five (5) years to complete their MBA or MS program.
- Students that violate the five (5) year window may request a time extension. The extension
