Admission Information

The application process consists of a three-step process: Applying to the University of North Texas Graduate Admission Office, applying to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business, and Departmental Admission. Please choose the one below that applies to you.


U.S. Citizen Process

Admission to a doctoral program in business is a three-step process:

  1. Admission to the University through the Graduate Admission Office
  2. Admission to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business
  3. Departmental Admission

Step 1: Admission to the University through the Graduate Admission Office

Admission to the University through the Graduate Admission Office consists of submitting an application, transcripts, official GMAT/GRE scores and an application fee. To be admitted to the Graduate Admission Office there is a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 on a bachelor degree and a 3.5 on a Masters degree.

Application

Please apply to the Graduate Admission Office online at goapplytexas.org. The application fee is $75.

On the application, you will be asked to select a concentration. When you select a concentration as your degree on your application, a copy of your application, transcripts, and GMAT/GRE test scores are automatically forwarded to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business Ph.D. Program & Research Office.

The Graduate Admission Office will send you an email and a pin number to check your application status *ONLY online at: www.my.unt.edu. You will need to activate your EUID with the pin number and click on Admissions Status. *ONLY reflects the Graduate Admission Office requirements that have been submitted. You still have to meet the college requirements in Step 2.

Official GMAT/GRE Scores

The G. Brint Ryan College of Business prefers the GMAT be taken but will accept the GRE if it has already been taken. There is no minimum score required, although successful applicants tend to have competitive scores. Test scores must be less than five (5) years old.

Official GMAT or GRE scores must be sent to the UNT Graduate Admission Office. The UNT code for the GRE is 6481. The UNT for the GMAT is 6DP-8M-55. Allow at least 4 weeks for scores to arrive at the Graduate Admission Office.

Deadlines

Admission process begins December 1 and continues until the program is filled.

Step 2: Admission to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business

You must be admitted to the Graduate Admission Office at the University of North Texas. Your application for admission, if complete, is then forwarded to the college. A Supplementary Information Sheet (Form A) including the additional supporting documentation listed below is required. This information should be submitted at the same time as you apply for admission to the Graduate School.

  1. Three Doctoral Applicant Evaluation Forms and/or three letters of recommendation from college professors or professional colleagues who are familiar with your academic record. (Form B)
  2. Your proposed major area.
  3. A short "Statement of Purpose" setting forth your reasons for pursuing doctoral study, personal objectives and career plans.
  4. A current vita.
  5. Please provide the following information on a topic that you would be interested in conducting research on (Effective Fall 2025 admission process):
    1. Provide one topic/idea that you would like to research (in less than 50 words).
    2. Why do you find this topic interesting (in less than 150 words)?
    3. Without getting into technical/statistical details, provide some general thoughts on how you would go about conducting research on this topic (in less than 200 words).
  • Send supporting documentation (recommendation letters, vita & statement of purpose): These items can be uploaded through your myUNT student portal under the "To-Do List." Then, select the document you want to submit and upload it through Add Attachment or Email to phdcoba@unt.edu
  • Minimum admission standards are established by the Graduate Faculty of the college. Admission to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business Ph.D. program is very competitive; therefore, satisfaction of the minimum standards does not guarantee admission to a degree program. Minimum admission standards of the college are as follows.

Step 3: Admission to the Department

Admission to each major area is based on the student's academic record, work experience, and expressed "Statement of Purpose" or personal objectives. Only students who, in the judgment of the Graduate Faculty of each major area, show high promise of academic achievement will be admitted. Satisfying the quantitative criteria does not guarantee admission. The Graduate Faculty of each major area may establish additional and/or higher requirements specific to their department.

The appropriate departmental committee will evaluate the student's application for admission on the basis of the department standards, indicate on the CoB Admission Form whether the student is Approved for Admission, Denied Admission (with reason) or Recommended for Provisional Admission and return the completed form to the Ph.D. Program & Research Office, BLB 201.

The Associate Dean for Academic Programs will send an admission decision letter to those students selected by the appropriate departmental committee. A copy of the letter will also be sent to the respective departmental Ph.D. Coordinator. UNT Ryan College of Business, as a member of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and in accordance with the CGS April 15 resolution, will honor offers until April 15. Although selected students are not obligated to accept their offer before April 15, we request them to kindly let us know as soon as they have decided in case we need to make offers to other students. If we do not receive an acceptance from selected students by April 15, the offer will automatically be rescinded after the April 15 deadline.

If an admission decision letter is issued after April 15, the student has 10 calendar days from the mailing date of the offer letter to accept the offer, after which the offer will automatically be rescinded.

Transfer of Programs

A student admitted by the G. Brint Ryan College of Business and an academic department who wishes to transfer into a different major area must meet the admission requirements of the newly selected major area. A student desiring a transfer must request admission to the selected major area in writing via the Toulouse Graduate School and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs. Approval of admission will be determined under the normal departmental admission requirements and procedures.

Students may change their major area only with the consent of the RCoB Doctoral Program Committee and the graduate faculties of the respective area(s). A student will not be permitted to change a major area after they have failed one qualifying examination.

International Admission

Transcripts

Mail your official school transcripts, diploma and degree certificate from all universities attended. These MUST be in both English and your native language, if applicable. English translations must be from either the academic institution or a certified translator.

*You will be able to upload unofficial scans of your international academic credentials through your myUNT student portal. After you have received your student account activation email, you can log in to your myUNT portal and upload your documents through the Admissions tile or Tasks tile. Select the document you want to submit and upload it through Add Attachment.

Please note: Unofficial international credentials are accepted for evaluation and admission purposes only. We will require official documents if/when you are admitted. Due to UNT policy, we cannot accept any unofficial U.S. transcripts.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

UNT degree program applicants must demonstrate English Language Proficiency. Minimum TOEFL score requirement is 79; Minimum IELTS score is 6.0. UNT-International provides a complete list of ways to demonstrate English language proficiency.

Financial Requirements and Your Guarantee of Funds

Proof of your finances are required by U.S. government regulations. Required Funds are listed at: international.unt.edu
