UNT AMA helps students market their personal brand

Professional development and networking are important skills for any business professional to master, and the UNT chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) helps students do just that.

The student organization’s mission is to develop sound thinking in marketing principles, while promoting networking among students and DFW professionals. In 2022, they were named an outstanding chapter by the national AMA, and the leadership team of UNT AMA was invited to speak on a panel at the International Collegiate Conference at the end of March.

The group meets weekly and provides members with guest speakers, recruiters, and various workshops on resume building, interview tips, and honing “elevator pitches”.

“I’ve learned so much about professional development and my personal brand – how to market myself,” said AMA President Hannah Moeliono.

The organization has grown in membership by 50% in the past year alone, requiring them to switch rooms to have enough space to accommodate everyone.

“It’s really cool seeing the growth of AMA. It makes me so happy to see people come out, week after week, just to talk about marketing,” said Moeliono.

A large part of the organization's growth is because AMA is open to ALL majors at UNT, not just marketing majors.

When joining AMA, students can expect to learn what marketing is and what careers they can have, gain professional development (including headshots), meet recruiters, and attend career fairs, tailgates, and other events.

“We want to give students networking and career opportunities, and something to talk about in an interview,” said Barbara Lamont, executive vice president of AMA.

Community service is also a large part of AMA, according to Moeliono and Lamont.

In 2022, UNT AMA hosted their first university-wide event, Rise Against Hunger, where volunteers packaged 10,000 meals in the UNT Union.

“It’s crazy to see the impact that people can make at UNT,” said Moeliono.

Moeliono joined AMA as a freshman in 2020. She is currently a junior in the User Experience, Communication Design Program in the College of Visual Arts & Design, minoring in marketing, art history, and nonprofit leadership studies. Outside of AMA, she is a part of the Honors College, User Experience Student Association, and the Asian Student Association. After college she plans to work as a User Experience Designer at a tech company or design consultancy.

Moeliono spoke about goals she has for AMA and noted that before she graduates she wants to continue to organize and create systems and communication lines for the rest of the board, to sustain the organization’s growth.

“I want to set the example of what AMA leadership could do if we stay organized,” said Moeliono.

The board currently has 7 members, including Lamont, who also joined the organization as a freshman.

Lamont is now a junior majoring in marketing and minoring in new media arts. She’s originally from Venezuela and learned English after moving to the U.S. She’s a part of numerous clubs and organizations, including the National Millennial Genz Community, Eaglethon, DSP Business fraternity, APO Community Service fraternity, the Ad Club, and Women in Business. After college, Lamont wants to work in a marketing agency or on the marketing side of a big company.

“AMA has been everything for me since the beginning. I want AMA to be as big as it can be. It makes me so happy to see the growth we’ve seen since I started,” said Lamont.

Other members of the board include:

Brendon Manns - VP, Finance
Payton Young - VP, Chapter Operations
Laura Rengifo - VP, Programming
Beatrice Mahiga - VP, Membership
Lailah Rodriguez - VP, Advertisement
