Biography: 

Dr. Kane J. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Technology & Decision Sciences. Previously, he held the rank of Assistant Professor of Information Systems & Supply Chain Management at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro where he was awarded the Margaret Hill Dean’s Notable Scholar Award in 2021. Dr. Smith was awarded his Ph.D., specializing in Information Security and Decision Analytics, from the College of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has published peer-reviewed research articles in numerous prestigious journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics, the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and Internet Research, among others. His prior research has focused on topics such as Cyberstalking, Blockchain Technology, Cybersecurity and Cybersecurity Policy. In addition to his research, Dr. Smith has also served on numerous doctoral committees as both a member and co-supervisor, as well as held service appoints within the Information Systems field, such as in 2020 through 2021 the President of the Special Interest Group on Security (SIGSEC) for the Association of Information Systems (AIS). In 2021, Dr. Smith was awarded a $250,000 USD grant from the Office of Naval Research focused on Cybersecurity Research on Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing Applications for Tomorrow's Workforce in STEM, where he hired 12 undergraduate students to both learn and perform focused research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain Technology and the Internet of Things. In 2024, Dr. Smith participated in the UNT DC fellows program, which brings a cadre of tenure-track assistant professors to Washington D.C. to meet with program directors at various funding agencies in a focused effort to facilitate faculty goals in obtaining resources and becoming aware of opportunities offered by funding agencies.

Academic Interests: 

The locus of Dr. Smith's research focuses on cybersecurity and, currently, he has begun to explore the intersection of cybersecurity, leadership and ethics. Additional areas of interest include the Economics of Information Systems, Blockchain Technology, Trust in Technology, and Ethics Washing.
