Biography: 

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Nat Pope earned his doctorate in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Wisconsin in 1999 and his Master of International Business degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management (Glendale, Arizona) in 1988. Additionally, he holds a handful of professional designations, including the ARM, CPCU and the ChFC.

He joined UNT coming from Illinois State University where he served as a faculty member for the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services. Dr. Pope has previously held academic appointments at the University of New South Wales and Bradley University. Prior to his current career in academia, Dr. Pope worked for Aon, Willis and Chubb in the insurance industry.

While broad ranging, Dr. Pope’s research interests are frequently rooted in international insurance issues. His academic record includes over 22 publications, with articles appearing in some of the pre-eminent journals in the risk management and insurance discipline.

His excellence in the classroom was recognized in 2016 with receipt of the highly coveted Excellence in Teaching Award presented by the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) – the leading association in the field of insurance academics.

Since 2017 Dr. Pope has served as the managing co-editor of the Journal of Insurance Issues. Bringing the Journal editorship to UNT represents the first time the department and the College have housed a respected academic journal in the risk management and insurance discipline.
